Hi Dave,
Thank you for your very good analysis. It should be required reading
for anyone who uses an amplifier, and Bob Lay's also. You hear so many
signals that have problems, and they're usually not overload of your
receiver, as the originator usually tries to tell you if you question him.
I believe most (or all) folks on this list are responsible, knowledgeable,
users, it's the "other" guys who need the info. I've been on this list
abt 6 mo.s, and posts this week have exceeded the previous total.
I have a URT-23 on the air, using a pair of 4CX-1500's as finals.
I've been told that the military changed out finals when the intermod
distortion exceeded spec. I sure hope I never have to change them out ;-)
It's designed for 1kw output, and I get very complimentary reports on
audio, width, etc. There are several ALC type circuits in there (starting
in the initial audio stage) to help keep things contained, and seem to
operate well in this Harris designed system. The exciter has an output of
only 100mw (yes, milliwatts), which is common in commercial/military
applications.
"The 4CX1500B/8660 is a low voltage, high current tetrode specifically
designed for exceptionally low intermodulation distortion and low grid
interception. The low distortion characteristics make the 4CX1500B/8660
especially suitable for radio frequency and audio frequency linear
amplifier service."
thanks & 73,
