QCWA Bulletin 2022-007 - QCWA Board Appoints Activities Manager
The QCWA Board is pleased to announce the appointment of QCWA Life
Member # 29803 John Kludt, K7SYS (ex K4SQC), to fill the position of the
QCWA Activities Manager.
John was born in Portland, OR, and grew up in Seattle, WA. He was first
licensed in 1962 by the 'Mike and Key Radio Club' under the direction of
“Pop” Brown, K7LED (SK). John reports, “We met in his basement on Angle
Lake near the Seattle-Tacoma Airport and marvelled at his high-end
Heathkit station”. He was granted KN7SYS and became K7SYS after
receiving his General license. After many years as K4SQC and now an
Amateur Extra, he I decided to return to his old call, K7SYS. John
enjoys state QSO parties: "pretty hard to play in the 7 QSO party as an
in region station with a 4 call, just as it was difficult to work the
Georgia QSO party as a “local” with a 7 call!"
He is a retired physician. After three decades in Atlanta, he relocated
to be closer to his children and grandchildren in Sandpoint, ID.
He continues to be interested in little pistol contesting and Dxing, as
well as satellites. The station is a Flex 6700 usually on 20 m (50 watts
on FT8) into a GAP vertical. His other interest is 1.296 GHz EME running
125 watts to the feed of a 1.8 meter portable dish from Sub-Lunar
Systems using the Flex 6700, Demi transverter and W6PQL PA. A Kenwood
D-710G and IC-910H rounds out the station, and is used primarily for ISS
packet operations and occasional satellite contacts.
He still has a Heathkit Twoer, complete with Turner microphone, from his
first days in amateur radio. This was his introduction to VHF and
remains a "favorite rig", even if there is no one left on 2m AM. Back in
the day DX was Seattle to Portland running 5 watts AM to a small
homemade Yagi.
47 & 73,
Ken Oelke, VE6AFO
