It is with sadness we report the passing of QCWA Member # 16841,
James (Jim) LaPorta, N1CC of Frankston, TX on September 20, 2017 at
the age of 76.

LaPorta served the Quarter Century Wireless Association, Inc. as

He was first licensed in 1956 as KN6SXX, and following high school
joined the US Army, then went to work for the Army as a civilian in
1968 in Mesquite, Texas.

While in the Dallas area he was president of the Dallas Amateur Radio
Club, 1970-1972, a member of the Richardson Wireless Klub, as well

one of his students was ARRL past president, Jim Haynie, W5JBP (Silent Key).

ARRL Headquarters. He left ARRL's employ to seek a job in
Telecommunications and moved to Western Connecticut where he was the
Training Supervisor for Product Information at General DataComm for
three years, before being hired by Motorola (Codex) starting a
17-year career with Motorola.

LaPorta's first love was DX contesting, and during his active contest
years as K6SXX, WA0ISO, DL4LA, W5QGZ, and W5LA his station made
several hundred thousand QSOs. He was quite active in contesting,
often running QRP, and was the Single-Operator Unlimited mixed-mode
QRP winner of the 2016 IARU HF Championship and in the Top 10
Single-Operator list (QRP) in the 2016 ARRL November Sweepstakes (phone).

He was very active during the ARRL Centennial QSO Party event in
2014, with one of the higher scores submitted.
