QCWA Bulletin 2015-010 - The Use Of "47" In The Closing Of Communications

In the future you will notice communications with members of the QCWA
Board, and other QCWA members, closing with both "47" and "73". We
all know that "73" means "best regards", but not everyone knows the
meaning of "47".

At the recent Board of Directors' meeting, Director Jeff Beals,
WA4AW, presented a resolution to the Board for adoption. The
resolution was to adopt the use of "47" in the closing of
communications, along with the use of "73". Beals came up with the
idea to signify the year QCWA was founded.

The Quarter Century Wireless Association (QCWA) was founded in 1947,
hence the idea to use "47". Further, the QCWA Constitution states;

ARTICLE I

NAME AND PURPOSES OF THE ASSOCIATION
Section 1. This Association shall be known as the QUARTER CENTURY
WIRELESS ASSOCIATION, INC.

Section 2. The purposes of the Association shall be:

(a) To promote friendship and cooperation among Amateur Radio
(Wireless) operators who were licensed as such at least a quarter of
a century ago.

Therefore the use of "47" signifies you are a member of the Quarter
Century Wireless Association promoting friendship and cooperation
among fellow radio amateurs.

47 & 73,
Ken Oelke, VE6AFO
President, Quarter Century Wireless Association, Inc.
