No, delinquent members will not receive any notice but to renew.

Yes, a link can be included in an announcement.

  Bob,

Just so I understand your email, are you saying that you don't want to include the active link because some people
on the list are not paying members, or is it that they just don't belong to a chapter? If it is because they don't belong
to a chapter, I don't see why they won't benefit from the link?

  Thanks,
  Howard

Of course there will be some kind of notification sent.

It will probably go to all the members that HQ has email ids for, many are not part of a chapter.

I normally stay out of these discussion but I have an idea that won't save money but will
save some time. It would be great if in addition to having the journal available in the
Member's Only section that an active link to the journal be included in the email sent to
those subscribed to this reflector to notify us that the journal is ready. (An active link is
one the someone can click on to open browsers or d/l files). That
would save a lot of time so we don't have to log into the Member's Only section
and hunt for the journal link entry. We, the chapter secretaries, can
then forward the email to the members of our chapter who have email and/or print
out a copy as necessary for those who do not (have email) with two clicks of the mouse button.

  Just a thought.

The PDF of the Journal will be on the Members Only section of the website,
just as they are now.

I think it is too late to worry about what else might have been done. I
think we need to deal with a PDF version sent with email and let each
chapter figure out the best way to distribute what is left of the
magazine.
In worst case, print one and let the members read it at a meeting.
Or print enough within each chapter for interested members.

Hi Dale,

I will conclude this thread with one more comment.

You say "If QCWA is, in fact, so close to bankruptcy, and even the
modest cost for a 99% reduction in mailings is not affordable, then I
contend that a call for help with that expense should have gone out to
the chapters prior to making the "all or nothing" decision."

I have been doing just as you say, suggesting that chapters make
donations to the operating fund, for over two years. Some chapters
did, but most did not. We can ask, but we can not force the chapters
to help. It is up to them.

Producing a print Journal for 50 people is simply not cost effective.
I doubt we could even find a printer who would print that few. It
needs to be more like 1000 copies for printers to be interested, and
producing that 1000 would cost us about half of what the present 5000
copies costs. Very simply, we can not afford it.

Thanks, 73,

Ken,

Thank you for your patient and thoughtful replies. I'll conclude my
thoughts and comments by saying that yes, I do get the picture as
presented
by you and President Oelke. What I don't get is why, if there are
"only"
about 1% (give or take) of the overall membership who do not have e-mail
or
computer access, printed copies of the "Journal" (and other appropriate
documents) could not be prepared and supplied by QCWA HQ. It seems to
me
that this would be a very small fraction of the present number of
printed
copies, at much less cost.

If QCWA is, in fact, so close to bankruptcy, and even the modest cost
for
a
99% reduction in mailings is not affordable, then I contend that a call
for
help with that expense should have gone out to the chapters prior to
making
the "all or nothing" decision. My concerns over lack of a uniform
solution
for all chapters with members not having e-mail is partly driven by
guessing (rightly or wrongly) that some chapters are better off
financially
than are others. The members of the "weaker" chapters are likely to see
their supply of hard copy dwindle over a rather short period of time.
Of
course, with amateur radio being a fraternity of wonderful people that
do
help one another a lot, I am glad to learn that many donors are stepping
up
to help with the associated issues.

I do truly appreciate the efforts that the QCWA officers and BoD are
making
to salvage a great organization. I just happen to think that some
approach
could have or should have been taken that did not penalize members, many
of
them being our oldest and/or incapacitated in some way, just because
they
lack computer and e-mail access. Thank you for your time and
consideration.

Oh, TNX for mentioning use of .PDF files in QCWA. I agree, the way to
go.

 Hi Dale,

 Thanks for your comments.

Apparently neither Ken Oelke nor myself have been able to get the
important point across. That is that the paper Journal would cease to
exist regardless of what we did. It would either stop because the the
organization went bankrupt and had to be shut down, or it would stop
but we would continue with 12 digital issues as we have. Again, I ask
you -- which would you prefer?

Others have the same opinion of the CQ publications special format as
you do. We plan to use pdf, which should be much better.

I am getting dozens of private e-mails from people offering to help.
Most chapters will make certain their members will get the Journal.
Many have 100% of their members with e-mail, so there is no problem.
Others have volunteered to print copies and mail to members who do not
belong to a chapter. The QCWA members have stepped up to help, as we
 knew they would.

To sum up, yes, we did think about things, and basically, all of this
is happening just as we expected it would.

 Thanks for your concerns.
