Northern Hemisphere Radio Wave Propagation Forecast b- We are now moving into the summer/winter solstice type of HF radio wave propagation conditions. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most unbalanced across the equator during this time period. During the northern hemisphere summer season the 14000- 30000 kHz frequency range closes later due to more sun light illuminating the ionosphere than in the southern hemisphere. But the maximum usable frequency (MUF) is lower than in the southern hemisphere as heating in the F2 layer of the ionosphere is higher and the layer less concentrated. Almost daily during the northern hemisphere summer season you will find that the 25600- 26100 kHz and 28000-30000 kHz frequency ranges will open via short north-south and east-west propagation paths via sporadic E (Es). Also when multiple sporadic E (Es) clouds form and line up favorably much longer propagation paths open up on east-west paths. And last but not least north-south propagation paths occur across the equator via trans equatorial propagation (TEP). 3150-3400, 3500-4100, 4750-5050, 5700-6300 kHz- S9 +1 to 9 at night and S1-3 at day, 6900-7800, 9200-9995, 10000-10150, 11500-12200 kHz- S9+ 1 to 9 at night and S4-7 at day, 13570-13850, 14000-14350, 15005-15900, 17450-17950, 18068-18168 kHz- S0 at night and S3-4 at day, 21000-21850 kHz- S0 at night and S1-2 at day, 24890-24990, 25600-26100 kHz- S0 at night and S1 at day, 28000-29700 kHz- S0 at night and S0 at day. This HF Radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP HF radio wave propagation prediction software. I wrote it beginning in the late 1980?s but I?m sorry to say that it can?t be distributed to the general public. It does outperform VOA CAP. And though this HF radio wave propagation forecast is produced based on the SIGINT_CAP software, I do check the actual band conditions at my location in the USA and tweak the forecast manually where and when necessary. I also check global HF radio wave propagation conditions via remoted radio receivers on every continent of the globe and tweak the forecast manually if and when necessary. And last but not least I look at ionsonde stations on every continent of the globe. The hamateur radio JT65A mode RF signal levels received are based on 5 watts and ? wave dipole up at 40 feet. The hamateur radio PSK31 mode RF signal levels received are based on 25 watts and ? wave dipole up at 40 feet. The hamateur radio CW mode RF signal levels received are based on 50 watts and ? wave dipole up at 40 feet. The hamateur radio SSB RF mode signal levels received are based on 100 watts and ? wave dipole up at 40 feet. The HF shortwave broadcast band AM Mode RF signal levels are based on 100,000 watts (100 kw) and a typical high gain VOA type curtain array antenna. Please keep in mind that this is a relatively simplified HF radio wave propagation forecast, so as to keep it easily understandable and applicable by the average radio enthusiast. Globally HF radio wave propagation conditions are most evenly balanced during the fall and spring equinoxes and most diametrically opposed during the summer and winter solstices. Conditions change daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and by decade, as the sun rises and sets at different times and at different angles from the ecliptic, as well as by radio wave frequency. This is due to changes in the maximum usable frequency (MUF), lowest usable frequency (LUF) and F layer critical frequency (FoF2). Also by propagation path. The D and E layers also come into play through RF radio wave signal absorption and refraction. And then there is sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation that can really throw a wrench into the gears so to speak. Things like sporadic E (Es) radio wave propagation and lightning storm static can impact HF radio wave propagation in an unpredictable manner and mostly bad. Ongoing solar, space and geomagnetic weather goings on also impact HF radio wave propagation conditions in a negative manner. Lower high frequency (80-30 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a negative manner not so much by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a particular propagation path and time but rather due to geomagnetic elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms (Kp-5 & greater) that increase signal absorption via the E layer (the altitude of the radio aurora). Also increases in the lowest usable frequency (LUF) via D layer RF signal absorption due to hard x-rays, galactic cosmic waves, elevated background solar flux levels greater than B0 and energetic proton flux levels at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0). Higher frequency (20-10 meters) propagation conditions are impacted in a negative manner by variations in the maximum usable frequency (MUF) along a particular propagation path and time due to the current sunspot number and also due to elevated geomagnetic conditions (Kp-3-4), storms of Kp-5 & greater. Also D layer RF signal absorption due to elevated (greater than B0) background solar flux levels. Also to a lesser extent elevated proton flux at energies greater than 10 MeV (10+0). Reproduction of information herein is allowed without permission in advance as long as proper credit is given. All 14 of the following indices have to occur as described below in order to see the best global high frequency radio wave propagation possible, something that happens rarely. 1.) Dropping geomagnetic field indices numbers are better, Kp of 0 best. 2.) A daily sunspot number of 150 or higher, 200 or higher best. 3.) A daily sunspot number of greater than 100 for routine stable formation of the E Valley/F Layer ducting mechanism. 4.) Previous 24 hour Ap index under 10, fewer than 7 for several days consecutively are best. 5.) Previous 3 hours Kp index fewer than 3 for mid latitude paths, fewer than 2 for high latitude paths, 0 for several days consecutively is best. 6.) Energetic protons no greater than 10 MeV (10+0). 7.) Background x-ray flux levels greater than B1 for several days consecutively, greater than C1 best. 8.) No current STRATWARM alert. 9.) Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz with a (positive number) sign, indicates a lesser chance of high latitude path aurora absorption/unpredictable refraction or scattering of medium frequency RF signals, when the Kp is above 3. 10.) A -10 or better towards a positive number Dst index during the recovery time after a geomagnetic storm, as related to the equatorial ring current. A positive number is best. In fact, a lot of these tips are good for most of the bigger Hamfests as well. 1. *Make a list* of companies and forums you want to visit.? My good friends at PC Board have a complete listing of both indoor and outdoor booths here -- *https://info.pcboard.ca/hamvention/* ? Note that booth numbers correspond to buildings or flea market areas. For example, we'll be in booths 3503, etc. in Building #3, also called the Marconi Building. *Split the list* in three categories -- (a) must see, (b) really want to see, and (c) would like to see.? Knock off the must see first, then tackle the others. 2.? If a booth is just too crowded, *don't spend a lot of time waiting* to talk to someone. Move on to your next stop.? Booth traffic starts to drop off after about 2-3PM and you'll have an easier time then.? Of course, it's /*ALWAYS*/ worth waiting at the Quicksilver Radio Booth ;-) 3.? Noon 'til 1:30 or so is peak time for lunch. *Eat a bit earlier, or later,* and you're likely to encounter much shorter lines at the food trucks.? Don't forget to *pack water and snacks,* or be prepared to pay typical concession stand prices for them.? If you need medication during the day, have that with you.? No sense hiking back to your car to get it.? And pack a bottle of your favorite *non-prescription pain reliever*, too.? A headache or sore feet can really kill your enjoyment of the show. There are just a very few real restrooms on site, but last year there were plenty of Porta-Potties that seemed to be well maintained throughout the show.? A small pack of baby wipes or similar might be handy to have. 4. *Be prepared for the weather*.? It might pour rain.? It might be blazing hot and sunny.? It might be damp and chilly.? It might even hail.? And all of them might occur over just a few hours!? A hat, sunscreen, umbrella, and light jacket should be in your pack. 5.? You're going to be on your feet -- a lot.? Unless you're used to standing for long periods, your "dogs will be barking".? One of the best tips I've ever heard is to *bring a second pair of shoes and socks*, and switch them halfway through the day.? Believe me, it will almost feel like you have a new pair of feet. 6. *Bring plenty of cash.*? While the larger commercial dealers probably accept credit cards, many in the flea market will not.? Try to get "used" bills.? If you have to get crisp new ones out of the ATM, take a minute to give each one a "crumple".? That makes them much less likely to stick together.? Especially early in the day, it may not be easy for a dealer to make change for a small purchase with a large bill.? And most (like me) always appreciate small bills to make change for others. 7.? If you plan to use a credit or debit card, *let your bank know in advance.*? Banks have ever more stringent anti-fraud practices in place, protecting both you and them.? You may typically use your card for a tank of gas and a trip to the grocery store once a week at home.? If you suddenly make a flurry of purchases in a short period of time, far from home, your bank may well flag and suspend the card. There should be a customer service number on the back of your card. *Make sure you can read it!* 8. *Take advantage of the opportunity to learn*. There are forums galore, covering just about every aspect of our great hobby.? They'll be presented by experts in the field, and you'll get the chance to meet fellow enthusiasts as well.? The same is true for shack accessories -- in many cases, you can speak directly with the guy who designed and manufactures it. 9.? Take a minute to *thank the hundreds of volunteers* who make the Hamvention possible.? I can't imagine how many hours of their time it takes to put on a show like this.? At the very least, they deserve a big round of thanks. Similarly, most vendors put a huge effort into their Dayton booths.? Without them, there's no show.? Let them know you're glad to see them.? And (I know it sounds a bit self-serving) keep them in mind year-round as you plan your purchases. *I don't see either Amazon or E-Bay on the vendor list!* 10.? Whether you go expecting to have a great time, or you think it's going to be terrible, you're probably right!? So *ignore that very small minority of Negative Ninnies*.? Yep, there will be a few glitches.? If you let that ruin your Hamvention, shame on you.? With Ringling Brothers' Circus now closed, this is the Greatest Show on Earth.? Enjoy all it has to offer, and take home some wonderful memories along with some new toys. ICE (Industrial Communications Engineers) Message-ID: <48a8fe05-4e48-a55b-4042-f83669af7033@bellsouth.net> Hello and thanks for tuning in to this newsletter. I have a BIG announcement to make! As of May 7, 2018, KF7P Metalwerks has acquired the production and distribution of all Morgan Manufacturing products, and is conducting business under the new name Morgan Systems LLC.? The current KF7P.com website and product line will remain as it is without any changes.? The new Morgan Systems line of products can be found under our new website, surgestop.com. I am really excited about this new venture!? I will be continuing the existing line of Morgan products as well as bringing back some*ICE (Industrial Communications Engineers*) legacy products as well.? And I will even add some totally new products of my own. As many will recall, *ICE* built a wide variety of arrestors, pre-amps, filters, switches, and grounding/bonding products.? In 2011 the product line was passed to W9ETA (the brother of the founder of ICE), and continued on under the name Morgan Mfg. Now in 2018 I am proud to continue the ICE legacy, and with a fresh set of eyes and enthusiasm, will move the brand forward. *http://www.surgestop.com/about.html** ** **http://kf7p.com/KF7P/Products.html* From bmarx at bellsouth.net Wed May 30 18:04:35 2018 From: bmarx at bellsouth.net (Bill) Date: Wed, 30 May 2018 18:04:35 -0400 Subject: [QCWA Everglades Chapter #69] Eagles Guitarist Joe Walsh, WB6ACU, Promotes Amateur Radio Message-ID: <41a027d9-0094-2569-83db-3933b7fd23bf@bellsouth.net> Eagles Guitarist Joe Walsh, WB6ACU, Promotes Amateur Radio in Media Announcements 05/30/2018 Legendary rock guitarist Joe Walsh, WB6ACU, of the Eagles is featured in a just-released set of ARRL audio and video *public service announcements* promoting Amateur Radio. ARRL will provide the 30- and 60-second PSAs to Public Information Officers (PIOs) to share with their Section?s television and radio stations. The ARRL Media and Public Relations Department also will provide these announcement files directly to interested television and radio outlets. The announcements are available for downloading from the ARRL website for members to use in promoting Amateur Radio at club meetings and public presentations, such as *ARRL Field Day* June 23 ? 24 (PSAs specifically for ARRL Field Day also are available). Walsh, who visited ARRL Headquarters last year for taping, wanted to deliver two main messages in his PSAs: get involved in Amateur Radio, and become a member of ARRL. The messages highlight the tremendous service that radio amateurs provide to communities, and convey how ARRL advocates on behalf of Amateur Radio on a wide range of legal and political issues. An ARRL Life Member and long-time radio amateur, Walsh personally has been a strong supporter and advocate of ARRL and Amateur Radio, and his ham shack is just as impressive as his home recording studio. ?I want to give back to the hobby that has given me so much enjoyment,? he said. The setting for the PSAs was W1AW, which Walsh was especially eager to revisit. The occasion also offered him with an opportunity to see equipment he?d donated to W1AW years earlier. Walsh?s past on-the-air forays on W1AW have always attracted enthusiastic pileups. While at W1AW, he spent some chatting with station manager Joe Carcia, NJ1Q, about the station?s operations. Walsh is a well-known collector of vintage Amateur Radio equipment. Creating the videos were Media and Public Relations Assistant Michelle Patnode, KC1JTA; freelance videographer/photographer Chris Zajac, and former Media and Public Relations Manager Sean Kutzko, KX9X, who also recorded a tag line for */ARRL Audio News/* with Walsh. http://www.arrl.org/news/eagles-guitarist-joe-walsh-wb6acu-promotes-amateur-radio-in-media-announcements From bmarx at bellsouth.net Wed May 30 18:06:39 2018 From: bmarx at bellsouth.net (Bill) Date: Wed, 30 May 2018 18:06:39 -0400 Subject: [QCWA Everglades Chapter #69] ARES Activated in Eight Maryland Counties for Severe Flooding Message-ID: ARES Activated in Eight Maryland Counties for Severe Flooding 05/29/2018 Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES?) volunteers in the Maryland-DC Section activated in the wake of regional flash flooding on May 27. Hit especially hard was Ellicott City, where vehicles were reported to have been washed away by fast-moving flood waters upward of 10 feet deep. At least one person was reported to be missing. ?As many watched Alberto, radio amateurs in Maryland watched more and more rain locally,? said ARRL Assistant Maryland-DC Section Manager and Public Information Coordinator Ken Reid, KG4USN. By 5 PM, heavy rain, as much as 8 to 10 inches, soaked portions of central and southern Maryland.? The flooding disaster was the second since 2016 in historic downtown Ellicott City, which was still recovering from the earlier event. High water also affected Arbutus, Dundalk, and Catonsville. Section leadership asked radio amateurs in the flood-affected areas to check on the health and welfare of their neighbors. Reid said high-water rescues were needed in Perry Hall and Patapsco State Park. When the flooding quickly became serious in several locations, MDC Section Manager Marty Pittinger, KB3MXM, activated ARES in eight central Maryland counties at 6:30 PM EDT, and 15 minutes later, more than 40 ARES volunteers reported to their respective 2-meter nets in five counties. The majority of flood-affected communities were in Anne Arundel, Prince Georges, and Howard counties. Amateur Radio volunteers in the MDC Section provided additional situational awareness, and Pittinger interfaced with Atlantic Division leadership, Maryland Section Emergency Coordinator Jim Montgomery, WB3KAS, and state and local authorities. ?Many county [emergency operations centers] in affected areas were also activated. Anne Arundel County ARES and Howard County ARES were in communication with their local Emergency Management Agencies and were both told to stand by in case of need,? Reid said. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan declared a state of emergency. ?Regular situational awareness updates were shared throughout the nets to ensure communication readiness for served agencies, community leadership, neighbors, first responders, and fellow radio amateurs,? Reid said. Conventional telecommunications continued to function throughout the heavy weather, which caused road closures and power and natural gas outages. The MDC ARES volunteers remained in duty until 10:15 PM on May 28. During the activation, radio amateurs made use of VHF, UHF, and HF capabilities, as well as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) modes. http://www.arrl.org/news/ares-activated-in-eight-maryland-counties-for-severe-flooding From bmarx at bellsouth.net Thu May 31 08:42:56 2018 From: bmarx at bellsouth.net (Bill) Date: Thu, 31 May 2018 08:42:56 -0400 Subject: [QCWA Everglades Chapter #69] WANTED: One (1) straight 10' section of ROHN 25G tower In-Reply-To: <003401d3f8d7$6fc00a70$4f401f50$@arrl.net> References: <003401d3f8d7$6fc00a70$4f401f50$@arrl.net> Message-ID: <391cf7bb-da74-b705-61fc-777ca8fd1148@bellsouth.net> I???m looking for one (1) straight 10??? section of ROHN 25G tower.
