My dad George, WC8X (previously WA8BMG) SK, was first licensed in 1961.  He frequently used the term ELMER to refer to Walter W8CVQ, one of his college instructors.  While he didn't become a ham until years later, he did feel that Walter was instrumental in his interest in ham radio.

Still, I don't remember him using that term until later in his life, so I doubt that it was in use during his college years.

In my case, Dad was the only real ELMER I ever had.
