Relaying a message (as requested) that Nate seems to be having
difficulty getting into the reflector. Vic
Good evening all;
My novice license is dated 12-26-51, the day after Christmas!
Because of the busy seasonal mail load (pre Internet and email) I didn't
receive it until Jan 2 or 3, 1952.I was a just turned 17 year old high
school kid who had been studying for the general class (or was that "B"
) ticket when the NOVICE class license was enacted and by then I had a
pretty good head start for the novice ticket.
The ham I hung around with and who helped me a lot was Andy Nestor,
W3UIR(sk).
I went to hamfests and radio club meetings with him and was under his
tutalge during my general class study period and the relatively easy
novice test.
ELMER was not used in those years -- 50's and early 60's, at least NOT
in the group I hung around with or contacted on air.I do not remember
the term "ELEMER" being used in print or on the air at the time I got
the novice ticket. The reference to Newkirk, the '71 time line and QSTis
probably right. It was 1973+/-when the term got my attention, more or less!
'Just an observation from an old guy who has been "playing radio" for
about 63 years. (ex WN3SVJ)
73 de W3SVJ, Nate, just another old guy enjoyin' the really good life in
the almost fast lane . . . so far!
