This post is off topic, but it is not a political statement. It is a
statement regarding two historical perceptions regarding Abraham
Lincoln.
If you want to agree or disagree with it, please do not post to the
group. Contact me directly.
My post is based on my life-long interest in and study of the slavery
issue and the United States Civil War.
The movie about Lincoln was not quite accurate about Lincoln, leaving
out the part where he signed an act presented to him by Congress that
would make slavery legal in the entire USA. He also tried to talk
the free blacks into establishing a new nation where they could move
and outlaw slavery.
He wrote the Emancipation Proclamation because it had become evident
that if he didn't, the war would be very hard to win. That document
changed the perceived reason for the war from a war against secession
to a war again's slavery, making it a more noble undertaking, which
it was.
After the Emancipation Proclamation, Black men were allowed to join
the military and given freedom.
See "The Abolitionists" on PBS for another view of those times
regarding slavery (three episodes, one hour each).
