Gents -
I am also 44 years old. And a 27 year ham. I support the idea of an
associate membership for those do not qualify for the standard membership.
>From QCWA folks, and others that have been hams for a long time, I have
learned much. And continue to. I think that providing a means to associate
the less experienced with those that have the knowledge would be a good
thing. Perhaps it will aid in elmering. Also, I know many hams that are
"age equivalent" to many of those in QCWA and would enjoy the fellowship of
their contemporaries.

Greetings,
I am not a Greyhaired ham yet... YET ! I am only 44, and yet waited the
25 years to become a member of QCWA with it's "Honors and privileges", and
I feel making a new member class will just water it down for the rest of us
in the "have it now" world.
It sounds like kids that can't wait til 16 and start sneaking drives in
their parents cars at 14 or 15...
I think it's time to poll the members who wish to get the journal
electronically instead, even if 20 percent of us opt for it, that would be
a big savings !
To the ones who want to join, bide your time, you will be OLD soon enough !
(Humor below)
Perhaps a QCWB (Quarter Century Wanna Bees ?) with dues coming in, but no
right to tout their membership with QCWA.

It is not a 'great dream' to join QCWA.
However, we did join it to associate
ourselves with more experienced amateur radio operators.
The [debatable] mission of the ARRL is
to encourage people into Amateur Radio and
encourage hams to work their way up the
ranks. They achieved it by compromising the learning process IMHO.
The mission of QCWA is to associate
those with many years of experience in Amateur Radio.
Associate memberships [as I understand
them to be from members that have less than
twenty-five years of experience] would mostly
draw newbies who would try amateur radio for a
short time and then drop out of the hobby. They
are only looking for a little instant
gratification and not the full, deep meaning of
the experience of Amateur Radio.
It is sad that an organization like ARRL
or QCWA has to be so concerned with finances that
it must compromise its mission to resolve those
issues. I believe ARRL has fallen deeply into
that trap. I would not like to see QCWA do the same thing.
Perhaps the best approach is to start
trimming the fat in the budget. Stop spending
money on things that return very little.
The 40% of the membership that won't use
computers should be rapidly dwindling as the
years go by. They either pass away or realize
that they need to become computer
literate. As highly experienced hams, they do
have the aptitude to do become computer literate in very short time.
If they choose to bury their heads in
the sand, that is their choice.
To that end: I would support changing
over to an electronic (possibly PDF) version of
our journal. If the ones who don't want to
become PC literate insist upon a printed copy,
they should cover the costs of the printed copy
and postage with a small surcharge on their
annual membership or a small yearly fee for life
members to get printed copy. I imagine it would
cut our operating costs significantly.
We could also offer for sale to members
a CD with all of the previous issues of our
journal on it. I imagine that would sell quite
well. It would be up to date as of the date the
CD was purchased and burned. Then they could
receive all subsequent copies separately.
It might not be a bad idea to sell the
CD to non-members (and I emphasize that they
would not be dues paying members). Money could be raised from that, too.
Let's not compromise our mission to
resolve economic issues. There are other ways.

How much per month are we paying for our Web site?
I am a Web hosting reseller. My service is provided on a very good
server with a lot of bandwidth.
I would host QCWA's site for free.
If the membership is interested in doing that, just have your
Webmaster contact me to arrange it.
That would be a way to save some money.

I typically do not get involved in these things but I strongly disagree with
an associate membership. QCWA, Quarter Century. Period!

Nope ... nada ... not even close ... no. I wonder how many would bail from
QCWA if this gets pushed through!!
I know one that would bail. I am NOT infavour of getting things easily or
NOW..! If you want it ... earn it ... oh ... isn't that what QC stands
for??

Bob,
That's good to hear.
I didn't know that Ritchie's father was a ham <tease>!
Did you mean WD5DBC?
But if you ever need my service, all you
have to do is ask and I'll be glad to host the
QCWA site. In fact, I host some other ham sites for free already.
