I think part of the problem is hams do not want to be leaned on for a lot of
thankless work. I have joined several organizations in my life and found
out the more valuable I was to the organization the more obligated I was to
take part in the work. It is no guarantee there will be capable successors
to keep organizations going. I have done my world traveling. I have no
interest in being hassled by security or waiting on a runway for hours or
missing connections that can be costly. Driving has its own difficult
hazards if one is unarmed in some areas.
