Hi Michael,
Thank you very much for your input.
I think you hit the nail on the head, with respect to where this problem of
decreasing membership has to be solved, i.e. at the chapter level. Of course,
direction from the National is important also. But, given that most QCWA member
involvement is at their Chapter(s), it is vital that those Chapters provide what
their members need and desire.
The social aspect is not to be minimized; it is very important. However, some
other purpose has to be there for the Chapter to generate interest and
enthusiasm among its members. With the pool of expertise and experience that
exists in QCWA, the value of a Chapter's activities can geatly benefit the
amateur population in general.
Some Chapters, for example, concentrate efforts towards Youth Education. Others
may have other projects geared to various aspects or needs of our hobby, perhaps
local endeavours.
The point is that QCWA does need other things to motivate members besides being
a Mutual Admiration Society.
Questions that could be asked are:
Is there a common project that could be universally embraced by all Chapters?
Or, is it better for each Chapter to decide what they will pursue as their goal
of benefitting local amateur radio?
Or, should we have both local & national/international projects?
Interestingly, call area 9 increased their membership numbers. I am inclined to
think that the interest generated by the project of hosting the Convention
Cruise was a factor involved. Membership increase may be a very good
side-benefit to hosting a QCWA Convention. Indeed, it can be considered a very
positive project, whether a cruise or land-based.
Another area, in addition to projects, that may produce results is maintaining
good communication within the Chapter. Does the Chapter have a good newsletter
or bulletin that continuously informs its members as to what is going on? Such
may well pay great dividends in member retention and increase.
Just some of my random thoughts as inspired by yours. Thanks again.
Cheers,
Dave VE3JX.
