We met today with him and his rehab team:
This was a busy week with lots of Dr appointments, more next week. His leg is now in a real cast from his thigh to his toes. He is non-weight bearing on that leg for up to 12 more weeks. They will re-evaluate in 4. We're hoping for some better news then.
He sees the neck Dr on Monday but expect no change there other than maybe some sort of time line when the brace can come off or be reduced.
His therapists continue to work with him and are pleased with his progress. He can now transfer himself from his bed to a wheel chair. (Try it sometime with only one leg and only one arm and no neck motion. Not as easy as it sounds). He can maneuver himself in the wheel chair using his right arm and leg which allows him to travel the floor he is on independently. It's a big building but the elevator is a challenge since he can't turn his head and needs to back up either to enter or exit.
The retirement facility that he lives in has established minimum standards that he must be able to achieve to return. It is an independent living facility that offers support at a minimal level. We all agreed today that he is not ready to return home and most likely won't until either the leg cast comes off or he is allowed to bear weight on his left leg. He was part of that decision and decided that was the best option for him until he is healed. Bethany/Pacific is a nice facility, the staff is caring and he has a spacious room.
His biggest challenge right now is that he is bored. He has a TV and a DVD player that help pass the time. He enjoys mail, cards and visitors. If people want to write or visit, it's:
Bill McCafferty
Bethany at Pacific
916 Pacific, Room 320
Everett, WA 98201
He has his cell phone with him as well, so people can call if they like. He's usually awake by 7am and asleep by 8pm. If you stop by to visit and he's not in his room, ask at the nurses station. More and more, he is up and roaming around.
And a big thank you to those who have stopped by or sent emails/cards. It brightens up his day and takes a little pressure off my brother and myself.
Hope that brings you up to speed. Thanks for asking-
-Lannon
