Respectfully, I fear you missed my point.
I wasn't insisting that the organization change into "something that
it's not." Rather, I was pointing out that numerous organizations,
throughout their histories, have changed their missions and
purposes--without being tied solely to what their name defined them to be.
Consider where Amateur Radio might be today if the ARRL membership
INSISTED that the organization promoted solely the relaying of message
traffic. (Disclaimer: I cut my teeth on traffic handling and NTS, so
this is in no way an attack on that fine past time.)
Gosh, I'm awfully glad that Hiram Percy Maxim had an open mind and
didn't insist that the ARRL "close shop" when other facets of the hobby
(DXing, contesting, military communications, homebrew construction,
etc.) started intruding upon the "trunk lines."
So, what's in a name? A name can reflect where we start, but it doesn't
necessarily reflect where we can go.
