Those “Nasty CBer’s;”

I’ve been involved with the “VEC” examinations since the inception in the early ‘80’s. I’ve attempted to “Elmer” as many people as I could over the years, and many stuck with the hobby. One memorable event happened at a test session when I went to the EARS Club in Edmond, OK several years ago. I was out in the hall listening to a discussion by a couple of the VE’s. They were former CBer’s and the point of their discussion was those “Nasty CBer’s. Inside taking the tests, were 10 men and women, of whom 7 were CBer’s. They (those taking the exams) were fed up with the 11 meter Band and wanted something new and more challenging. They had seen the rigs in my truck and it opened the door to ham radio. I was able to introduce QRZ.Com and lead them into the wonderful world of amateur radio. The CB world is a valuable pool and resource for the ham community. It is largely untapped. If we as older hams will take the time to visit with them to find out their interests and focus on them and not be judgmental. It will open the door to allow us to Elmer CBer’s into amateur radio. It’s worked pretty well for me for several decades now.
