[QCWA] QCWA Silent Keys

Greetings Croft,
The recent letter addressing Silent Key reports in the Journal got me to
thinking about an issue that has caused me some concern of late.
Our members need to make their families aware of just how important this
hobby and organization are to them. In other words we need to give a written
notice to our kids and loved ones with all the pertinent QCWA data including
our callsign and QCWA membership number along with QCWA addresses and
telephone numbers. The family should be instructed of the importance of
notifying the organization so that the amateur fraternity can be aware of
the loss of one of our own.
The reason this is important was evidenced to me by a situation that
occurred with Herb Gleed, W6FQ. His daughter moved him from the facility he
was in and I had no way to contact her to find out where he had been moved.
I tried mailing letters to the various addresses Herb had in the past hoping
that they might be forwarded to him. I called the facilities where he had
been and due to "privacy issues" they would not give me any information as
to where he had been moved. I don't know if he is even alive at this point.
I noted in the Journal that awards had been given to him after this period
but I don't know how they could have been delivered since all my mail to
Herb before that time was returned.
Herb was a great guy and was a stalwart on the QCWA 20 Meter Net for years.
He deserved better than to QSB into oblivion.
I hope this note will be a word to the wise!
73,
Doug W6KE
