lHank, Yep I just confirmed that about it takes a drunkard to accomplish
some of that stuff!!! I also attended Camp Crowder in 45 after returning
to the USASHIMA in 45. I got back from overseas in late 44 and so many
top 3 graders were arriving in Louisiana and Mississippi based on the 80
points served overseas that they literraly were running out of bunks to
keep them in. At Deridder Army AIR BASe their only opetion was to send us
to Crowder to learn some more stuff. Like wide band FM repair, and other
mntnce items that were not covered by Monmouth. I fell asleep often in
the visual training file clips they were showing us, but one day opened my
eyes for a second and WOW!!!! they had a french movie on there that would
blow your mind. I did'nt start sleeping again for weeks hopeing they would
put another one on the screen.. Point is I never went to Monmouth in
the first place and no Basic Trng involved either. Went straight
from CCC camp radio opr to Ft Benning 5th Sig Detachment. The Ft Benning
sent me a msg via CCC radio chnls asking if I would like an instant
transfer from CCC's to Signal Corps and I said sure why not.
A week later was in inductee camp at Benning and waiting for
a jeep to pick me up and transfer me to the XMTR site at WUO.
That was close to the Main Gate at Benning. I went to work on mid
shifte 2 days later and it was great. We also get paid not only
by the ARMY, but also by Postal Telegraph and Western Union!
So our total mil pay and the commercial pay was at least 3 times
what at PFC would get.
                          Joe (W4FAG) at that time.
