Although I can not trace my beginnings back as far as the majority, I have
to agree with
Harvey. Walt - you are to be congratulated getting your family involved.
Licensed in 55
just prior to going into the USN - I did have an advantage over many in
communications
school - knew the code and could type. Volunteered to teach night school
until a 'spit &
polish' Chief told me that I either got my hair cut or I would not be
allowed to teach the
night school code class - So, seeing I was doing it to help my classmates
and others, I
just stopped. Anyway, our son turned down 2 scholarships out of highschool
and
enlisted in the USN. As a surprise to me, he went for ET [Electronic Tech] -
never
giving any indication during his growing up he even was interested in all
the radios/etc.
Guess he in his way thought it was pretty neat. He spent a lot of time with
Special
Warfare as Commo support, and his time on 'boats'. Just prior to his last
deployment,
he dropped a package for the Army to become a W.O. and fly choppers - He had
always wanted to fly, but when I asked him why did it take him 10+ years to
reach for
his dream - he replied, I had to grow up dad!!!
Glad to say he is now a W.O. @ Ft Rucker, Al going through flight school -
and when
he called us up and said "I have broken the bounds of the earth!!", you
could tell he
was fulfilling his dream. Maybe he will down the road play with one of my
many
radios?? Our daughter sure don't seem to have that inclination - she is a
Chinese
Linguist with the USN.
So, Walt - you have to be congratulated on your 'ham family'.
73,
JOE W7LPF
