Yes I remember in 1942 the RTTY started pushing out the
the CW etc. I knew the one tech who was also Signal Corps
and had to handle all TTY's on the Island.  Boy he got in
his mileage swishing back and forth from SJU to Ponce to
every other spot on the island trying to keep those ancient
things running.
