January 14, 2006: "A Transmitter Hunt on Steroids," Phil Wherry, AI4JF

"Phil Wherry entertained us with a fact-filled presentation on the  
most recent two of three successful radio-equipped, weather balloon  
launches made by a local ham club, the Vienna Wireless Society (VWS)...

"The main components of VWS-2 flight package were, from top to bottom...

"Phil used a Kenwood TH-D7A hand-held, which has APRS tracking built  
into it, and a rubber-duck antenna to follow the balloon's track over  
the ground until it descended below his radio's horizon...

"Using Google Earth maps to help identify prominent landmarks in the  
photos and TV images, Phil retraced the trajectory of the balloon...

"The photo, taken from VWS-3, is looking east across the Potomac  
River, Chesapeake Bay, with Cape May, NJ, in the distance."

"On Tuesday, August 16, 2005, Carol (WA4GFW) and I (WN4PP) left  
Dulles Airport for a QCWA-sponsored Alaskan tour and cruise...

Chena Indian Village on the Yukon River...

"Thursday, we boarded a glass-domed train McKinley Explorer bound for  
Denali National Park...

"...we boarded Holland America's MS Veendam for our cruise...
