Somewhere there has to be a balance between things
like fair use under the Copyright laws, and the
collection of email addresses and other information
in order to get access to 'free' information on the
internet. That's an ethical debate that won't get
solved soon, but when things like this come up,
you all may be interested in a website that provides
userid/passwords to free websites for the purposes
of avoiding registrations... www.bugmenot.com

There are several userid / password combinations
listed there for the New York Times site.
