I too will agree 100%.
I think the folks who are against it simply have "sour grapes" because
they had to take the CW portion and it will no longer be required.
While I have nothing against CW and hope it will always be a part of
Amateur Radio, and while I would continue to encourage all "hams" to
learn to use it at least at 5 wpm, I feel CW does not do anything at all
to make anyone a better Amateur Radio operator.
I too had to pass the CW portion for my Amateur Extra, but I saw no need
in it then and see no need in it now. Knowing the theory, regulations,
etc. to pass the written test makes me a better operator, but sending
and receiving CW does not, nor does it for anyone else. It does,
however, stop many who would otherwise be excellent assets to all of us
in our Amateur bands from ever getting licensed.
I must say that during my 34 years licensed I have gotten the distinct
feeling that the majority of our no-code techs on VHF are much better
mannered, and much more technologically knowledgeable about radio and
it's proper operation, than most of the coded "hams" I hear on HF.
Especially those on 75 meters, which to me sounds more like a 3.9 mHz CB
radio.
Maybe those who think the CW portion should be required would also want
to take us back to the days like when I got my drivers license and had
to show I could drive with a manual transmission and standard steering
and parallel park.
The music hasn't died, but now it will grow and have more variety of
qualified licensees.
