Speaking of the similar matters as Norm who was at WAR.
I was simultaneously at WUO (Ft Benning). I was a buck private
initially getting about $30 a month as I recall. However the
Control Site for WUO was in the Infantry School bldg not far from
the Main gate at Benning. Our assignment included not only
handling the WD radio traffic, but also takeing Telegrams over the
counter for both Western Union and Postal Telegraph whose offices
were in nearby Columbus, Ga. Both of these companies paid a
bonus to us directly and it more than doubled our military pay.
Starting with the WW1 Master Sgt in charge of WUO, and down to
the buck privates like me. Of course the NCOIC got the biggest
bonus as a Master Sgt, but I think this was a unique situation that
may have occurred elsewhere in the system too.
