I just grabbed my ARRL handbook (1991 - neither really new or
really old), and it shows several formulae for determining code
speed:

  speed (WPM) = (dots/min) / 25 = (dots/sec) X 2.4

  speed(WPM) = 1.2 X clock freq for a properly-adjusted keyer

  speed(WPM) = (zeros/min) X 0.44

It alos has a discussion of the "PARIS" and "CODEX" standards
for measuring word length. An interesting read.
