It could be that due to the varying length of each character, the actual
amount of time to send a "word" varies in morse code. On a typewriter,
all characters are the same as far as the amount of time is concerned.
Then again, it could be similar to "music power" vs "RMS" which allows
certain manufactures to claim 1500 watts out of a stereo amplifer driving
a pair of 4" speakers and drawling less than a couple of amps from the
wall outlet. ;-)
