It was indeed Powell Crosley's WLW, running 500 KW at Mason, Ohio, north
of Cincinnati.  I never heard any tales of RF burns from fences but
plenty of folks had tales of picking up the station without the
necessity of owning a radio.  All of it was outlined in the late Joe
Rice's (W4RHZ) books "Early Cincinnati Radio", published in 1970 but now
out of print.
