Hi Paul- Cant help but to add my 2 cents worth to the bc "first".
Suggest you visit "The Boston Radio Archives" on the internet, a very
interesting 4 page article entitled " The Rise and Fall of WGI, the
First Station in Massachusetts". It was on the campus of Tufts University
in Medford, MA , [ I then lived in West Medford] on land leased by Tufts
to the Amrad Corporation in 1917 who received the call letters of 1XE and
later WGI. I Have an interest in this because I graduated from Tufts in
1942, BSEE. The old Amrad building was then used by Tufts for some of our
EE classes especially High Voltage labs. I believe that their old antenna
tower was still standing. It also housed the college Ham station, so I
spent quite a bit of my time there. My uncle, Phil Sewall,[W1CWZ] still a
young boy, built for our family a 2 tube bc set and I still distinctly
recall listening with my father, the Big Brother program around 1925-26
in the early evening, we had the luxury of 2 sets of earphones.
Incidently, Phil,[first licensed about 1928-20,] to whom I was very
close, passed away a few months ago.
