Reporting System(APRS); Annual Awards Luncheon:
"After a short business meeting, President John Reiser served as  
master of ceremonies for the presentation of awards from QCWA to the  
following Chapter 91 members...

"VP and Program Chairman Len Hook, KG6ZR, introduced Pete Norloff,  
KG4OJT, as our speaker...

"Pete's topic: the Automatic Position Reporting System (APRS). APRS  
is a system for using packet radio to broadcast computer-generated  
data via a radio link operating on a shared ham-band frequency...

"Created by Bob Bruninga, WA3APR, in 1984, the first version of the  
software was written by him on a VIC-20...

"The map on the left shows successive position reports (in green)  
obtained from an Internet website archiving position reports from  
KG4OJT since last November...

"Pete showed how buses carrying the "survivors" of a mock transport  
aircraft crash were tracked on their way to area hospitals by Fairfax  
County ARES during an all-day drill centered on Dulles International  
Airport (IAD)...

"a bicycle-mounted APRS station that Maria Norton, KG4JBJ, uses when  
she takes on the role of "tail-end Charlie" in marathon races...
