Norm and all the others about CW. I for one give credit to the fact
that since 1940 CW has not only entertained me, it has actually
fed me and assured me a great retirement. First started makeing
money as a CCC camp ro in Starke, Fla. It was a WW1 seniors camp.
I honed my skills there, and in the process was discovered hideing
out at a CCC camp by the Signal corps at Ft Benning. They requested
I volunteer and they would assure me "no boot camp to go thru",
plus about 30$ a month pay (was getting only 8$ a month in CCC's
and the other $22 went direct to my mom.) So I jumped at the
opportunity and took both my Vibroplex original, and my homebrew
cootie key with me and used both in WD radio traffic handling.
>From 1940 to 1945 (right after VJ day) I did cw and loved it.
Then got out of the Sig Corps and went straight into the Airlines
and a short stint in old CAA. Still eating well off my
CW abilitity. After 40 years with Military, CAA, and ARINC,
I retired in 1984 after all that CW. I lived well, ate well,
and enjoyed every minute of my retirement years. I finally
gave away all my "bugs" (I had 3 of them) to fellow MARs members
here in Honolulu. I am now a Packet and Pactor operator only.
I dont do cw anymore, in fact I rarely get on a ham band at all.
Once in a while I use a friends VHF repeater and echo/link to
talk to far away places with the ease of a phone call.
CW may be finished for all purposes, but its memory remains
in my heart and soul till I die.
                     Joe Fenn (aka kilroy)
