December 10, 2005: Holiday Luncheon: Bob Zimmerman, KB3IWD, speaks on
the Early Manned Space Flights
"Our annual Holiday Luncheon was held at the Marco Polo Restaurant in
Vienna, VA...
"QCWA President John Johnston, W3BE, was then invited up front to
present...
QCWA's Presidential Honors Award to Diane Zimmerman, AA3OF
QCWA's Meritorious Award in behalf of Chapter 91 to Len
Hook, KG6ZR
"With a nod to a photo of American astronaut Mike Fink talking to
Earthlings from space via amateur radio from the International Space
Station (ISS), Bob Zimmerman said that amateur radio communications
can provide an important link between those aloft and those who
remain on Earth...
"Bob then gave us a pictorial tour, with fascinating human-interest
stories along the way, of several of the more significant Russian
space stations in the Salyut series and of the early Soyuz
spacecraft, manned and unmanned, that visited them between 1974 &
1985...
"Bob's remarks made it clear that the United States has followed, not
led, the Russians with one exception: SkyLab (1973-79).
He called it the one "glorious forgotten triumph" of NASA's manned-
space program...
"Some lessons learned from these early missions..."
