I was introduced to Wolfman Jack when I was a Sophomore in High
School. It was 1966 and he was on XERB. The station billed itself as
"The Mighty Six Ninety." While he was on from around 9:00 PM to
Midnight, the station carried off-track betting during Evening Drive
Time. In between advertisements for a type of newsletter that
handicapped horses -- a la The Daily Racing Form -- there was an
announcer who re-created horse races from other states. This was not a
live hook-up. He merely imitated the way the on-track announcer might
call the race -- much like I understand Dutch Reagan did for baseball
games, early in his career.
