Here is a message that I picked up from another reflector that
contains information vital to all of us! BPL is going into service in lots
of places around the U.S. I thought that it was only on the East coast,
but was surprised to find it in Cape Girardeau, Missouri (300 miles from
me). It is lengthy, took about 8 minutes for me to down load using a DSL
connection.
>------- Forwarded message follows -------
>Sorry for the added bandwidth and wide distribution, however this is a
>matter of interest to ALL Amateurs in Western NY. The threat of BPL is
>very real, and right in our back yard! Last weekend, members of the
>Rochester VHF Group made a trip to Penn Yan, NY where a BPL Trial is
>underway, to check out whether or not the claims of "No Interference"
>were real. Using both Amateur HF, and Commercial HF Radios, the
>interference was unmistakable. And it was captured on audio tape,
>which has been transferred to an MP3 formatted file.
>
>If you've been wondering what BPL sounds like, the soundfile from that
>trip to Penn Yan, NY is now online. Go to:

>
>and check the Downloads section.
>
>WARNING: The file is VERY large (16MB) so be aware if you are not on a
>broadband connection, this will take quite some time to download.
>(Ironic, isn't it!)
>
>It's very frightening to hear. The weekend this recording was made, CQ
>WPX SSB Contest was raging. You'll hear stations calling "CQ Contest"
>just above the BPL noise - and if you've ever operated an HF contest,
>you'll know many of the signals are usually LOUD. You can hear
>evidence of signals being masked by the Broadband hash.
>
>If your Club or Organization has not contributed to the ARRL BPL
>Defense Fund yet, I STRONGLY encourage you to do so. The Rochester VHF
>Group has voted to donate $500, and will take additional monies from
>members to put towards that end. If you wish, send any donations to
>the RVHFG Treasurer, K2EHF, BEFORE April 9th. If you cannot do that,
>but will be attending the meeting - bring your monies (payable to the
>Rochester VHF Group, should you choose to donate on behalf of the
>RVHFG) with you that night. We will be handing off the check to the
>WNY Section Manager (W2LC) that evening.
>
>Thanks for your attention. Please make this information available to
>your club membership (if possible) for review.
>
>Regards,
