Yeah Norm, I was a kid in high school that was 1937 when joined
the local Guard unit in Kokomo, In. That field unit was quite
a heavy box about 3 ' square. Operated on HF with a single
type 10 tube with the ceramic base. The antenna was made of
metal components that folded up and was carried in a small pouch.
It as installed by joining the 4 foldable units into a diamond
shape like /\ and the HF freqs as I recalled were tuneable
                `'
up in the 80 meter band area. A simple M/O tuned like a harley
osc on xmit and forget what the rcvr inside used. The generator
had its own built in saddle that the guy could sit on like a bycicle
seat and lean a little forward and crank with both arms. I tried
it a few times, but it really took a bunch of energy to crank that
thing when key down. I believe it was strictly used by F.A. units
but I dont know for sure. I had 5 of the SCR 299's assigned to me
at Biloxi (camp shelby) after I returned from overseas with my
85 accumulated system points. The old BC610, BC342N and the whole
shebang! I think later on the "Globe Kind" 500 watt ham rig
that was so popular was almost a carbon copy of the BC610 or very
close to it. I baught one in 52 and it got the job done just
fine before the advent of ssb came in.
                         Joe
