December 11, 2004: Holiday Luncheon: ARRL's Chris Imlay, W3KD, is our
featured speaker
Our annual Holiday Luncheon was held again this year at the Marco Polo
Restaurant in Vienna, VA. With 60 in attendance, a little less than half
being female, an excellent menu and decor, and everyone dressed for the
occasion, it was quite an enjoyable party...
Chris Imlay, W3KD, General Counsel for the ARRL, was introduced by Len Hook,
KG6ZR, as our after-dinner source of wisdom and entertainment...
Chris first talked about Broadband over Power Line (BPL), which he called
"Public enemy #1; an idea that should never have gotten started in the first
place." Second, he talked about some of the valuable spectrum allocations
that the Amateur Radio Service holds at 70 cm and down.
Recognizing the diversity of his audience and the festive occasion, Chris
managed to keep his commentary light but informative. To illustrate, here
are just two quotes:
"The FCC Technical Staff consists of good engineers; they know what's an
interference source and what's not. They didn't invent the idea of BPL or
propose it on their own, the 2nd Bush administration did. The Bush
administration holds as a policy objective the provision of broadband access
for everyone by 2007."
"Someone far from the FCC put into the Bush administration's mind the idea
that BPL is a good idea because power lines go everywhere. And it seems like
a great idea until you realize that unshielded power lines are marvelous
unintentional radiators of radio frequency energy."
