[Qcwa] RE: QCWA digest, Vol 1 #349 - 6 msgs

I have had to invest a great deal of time and some money to attempt to
control SPAM coming into my office and home. I do not enjoy taking time out
of my day to manage spam from sources advertising pornography, prescription
drugs and mortgage refinancing deals. It is a poor practice that
organizations such as the QCWA have to resort to selling member information
to list services and have our email addresses end up used for the immoral
purposes listed here. The Board of Directors apparently did not understand
the scope of the effect of selling our information. Other amateur radio
sites have done the same thing, sometimes inadvertently. The servers of the
organizations we frequent such as the ARRL and QTH.com and E-Bay also
had(have) a problem with our email addresses being mined. If you think about
though, anyone can sign onto QRZ.com and get your email address there, and
trust me 'they' do!

This is a huge problem and may take federal legislation to correct, however
I don't know if we want that kind of govermental intervention.

One thing for sure, never reply to any of the spam you get. When they offer
to take you off the list by emailing them back do not reply, it only
confirms they have located a valid email address. Also, never give your
primary email address when registering on web sites. Have a couple other
email addresses for this purpose. And when you reply to email change your
address to look like this joeNOSPAMemail@_____.com etc. I have been using a
trial version of an antispam program that works well, you can try it for 15
days to see if you like it. It works with Outlook or Outlook express. Go to
www.giantcompany.com and try Postal Inspector (I am not at all affiliated
with that company - just a suggestion). The program is $20 if you buy it.
There are probably some shareware programs out there too.

Alan

Hello Bob, Larry, and the rest of us:

Here are Croft's statements. It was no rumor. Croft sent the following to me

and stated he had decided to discontinue the approval for reasons stated. He

asked that it be posted on the Reflector because he could not get through to

the Reflector himself.

Again, this was no rumor, as in fact the Directors had voted to sell the
information. Their report to the membership at large was presented seven and

one-half months later in the Journal.

Dear Ray,

This subject was discussed at length at the last Board meeting, and was
given approval at that time. Part of the reason for the approval was to
generate some additional income in order to avoid raising dues to our
members. It was felt that such information was already in the public domain
and electronically available on the FCC listings, to any agency who desired
it.

I would like to inform you however, that our year's end financial results
improved over what was forecasted, and for that reason, I have approved the
discontinuance of this proposal in that 1) there did not seem to be any
interest in making use of such information and 2) we no longer needed that
potential
source of income. There is, therefore, no longer any need for concern from
those who considered this a unique source of information. .

Jim, would you please repeat this message on our reflector, as I seem to be
having trouble accessing it with the RAC.CA address.

Respectfully,

73, Croft Taylor - VE3CT

No, you are not the only one "mad as hops." If what you say is true, I am
angry also!
Can anyone else shed some light on this?

Well said Bob,

I for one would be more than happy to see EVERYONE that claims to
hate the QCWA, the Board of Directors, and everything else associated
with the QCWA to either put up or shut up.

If you don't like the way things are, quit yer bitching and get
involved.
And by getting involved, I mean GET ON THE BOARD, not just your
keyboard to send off the cuff rants to the reflector trying to garner a few
other malcontents.

I've belonged to several organizations over the years, and it's always
the same thing. There's always a group of people that bitch and moan. And
that's all they apparently do. When it's time for volunteers, they're
usually no
where to be seen.

By and large, the QCWA board of directors has done an excellent job
representing the members *that get involved*.

I've been on a board of directors, I've been a chairman and I've been
involved in frequency coordination. All I can say about that job is that if
you don't get any death threats, you're not doing your job.

To Jim Walsh, and Croft Taylor, keep up the good work. All I would
add, is that in the future, something as controversial as this should be put
into the QCWA Journal for review as soon as possible.

Not that malcontents will read it, they usually make the most noise
after
the period for comments is over. And typically, rather than engaging in a
reasonable discussion about the issue, will resort to inflammatory comments
like, "They sold us out" and so forth.

As a point of information to those who were concerned about selling
the membership list, the QCWA web page for several months has had a
link to an "Infocus" information page listing the possible uses for
the membership list. It might be of interest to see that the intent
of the BOD was not to make members names available for any "evil"
purpose, but to provide information to members fitting their
interests in radio and health and retirement issues. Please keep
you"receivers" open to all messages to allow you evaluate all the
facts and sides of the question. Hope this helps put this issue in
the proper perspective. Please check the web page if you have time.
