Several weeks ago, friend and colleague Gene/K5DLE
entertained a relatively new Extra Class Ham in his shop and asked if he had
ever made a CW contact. The answer was "no". The reason: "I
don't know how." This prompted Gene to come up with the idea of having a
CW rig set up at Oklahoma's Ham Holiday this weekend. Gene and I are the
committee of two to set up and staff the QCWA Table (we recruit a lot of
new members this way!), and we decided to prepare a handout for would-be CW
Operators. Here's the gist of it. Feel free to copy, amend and use
it to your Chapters' benefit.
"KNOW CODE, BUT..... You'd be surprised how
many hams have passed the Code Test, but have not, that is, never, made a
Cw contact! Why bother, when it's so easy to pick up a mike and talk into
it? Or, let a keyboard do the work for you? Not that we have a thing
against other modes of communication, but, a lot of us QCWA Members cut our
teeth on Morse Code and love it!
And, we're willing to share our experience with
you. Here today, at the State Ham Convention, we have a CW station set up,
and will show you the steps necessary to complete a CW QSO.
Also, we're willing to help you, one on one, at
your QTH or ours, get started on another fun aspect of our hobby.
Could be you've been licensed for a number of
years, and are somewhat embarrassed to admit you've been wanting in the CW
department? We'll keep a teacher-student confident- tiality if you
want. hi
So, look around. Ask questions.
Dive into CW. The water's fine, and we're having a bunch of
fun!"
By now you've guessed I'm for a Code
Requirement. Dave AD5MH Chapter 63
