Well I pale compared to a number of you but I do remember S&H Green stamps
and also Top Value stamps that were yellow. If fact in about 1955 my parents
got a Coleman Lantern and a Coleman Cook stove with Top Value stamps. We ate
many a good breakfast off the stove. In fact I still have both today. I use
the stove at least twice a year to help cook breakfast at the Princeton
(Il.) hamfest and the Peoria (IL.) hamfest. Still tastes pretty darn good
(has nothing to do with the cook!!) I have seen a number Ercoupes but never
rode in one. However the last airplane the my wife, father-in-law and myself
owned was a 1947 Stinson. Then there was the heavy stuff! Until about a
month ago I owned a Caterpillar crawler. It was a 1933 Model 35. It was gas
powered and started (with much effort with a large hand crank) It was a 485
cubic 4 cylinder engine attached to 14,000 lbs of steel. It was a great to.
Radio giving you fits just park this baby in front of it and if it didn't
straighten up well the choice was yours! Oh the best part! Living in Peoria
but now out in the boonies near Peoria I was privileged to know both W9CI
Erick Shaukhauser and W9RGH Russ Plank of RME. I ate many lunches with then
and attended many Peoria Area Amateur Radio Club meetings with them. Great
people. Unfortunately I was interested in RME but not smart enough to at the
time learn all I could. I still kick myself for not learning more from these
two gentleman. You could talk to them like anyone else on earth. I remember
a couple of years out at Dayton when Eric was still able to attend. A couple
of us would go talk to Eric waiting for the bus out front. We would make
sure he had the needed transportation but then also remind him that we
didn't want to read anything in the Dayton newspaper about W9CI being
arrested for being rowdy.
He would look at us and smile and say "I wish you could"! If anyone has
people that are still around them like Eric and Russ. Treasure them because
there are not many left!
Enough from here but I also recognized a bunch of things mentioned so I
proudly say I am up close to the rest of you!
Happy Holidays to all! Please remember the folks around the world and in
this country that continue to protect us!
