Hi Norm,
Yeah I guess we will never find out what happened to the old 5th
Signal outfit. I even questioned Chief Army Mars Bob Sutton
(retired Maj Genl) about the 5th and he had no recognisance of
any such outfit. I did get a recent remark from one of the
EM's at ABM6USA the pacific gateway however. I was talking to him
about what Sig Corps outfit he works for and he said 31st Signal
Batallion at Schofield Barracks. When I mentioned the 5th
Sig Svc Co, he says "oh they are all over in England". I
thought Huh?????????!! But did'nt dig him about it. What in the
heck it must be a different outfit entirely I supposed.
Incidentally the info I got on the USATS boat didnt come from
Ft Gordon either, it came from some Quartermaster source as FT
Gordon had passed my info request on to them. In fact I learned
that the boats original name was not "Florida". Apparently someone
had owned it before Vanderbilt got it. Darn it I didnt document
the info they gave me so will never know now what its original name
was nor who owned it prior to Banderbilt.
                          Joe/KH6JF
