[Qcwa] ref special character sets, excel, etc

Hi, Joe.

Initially, that was certainly true - but that's ancient history by now.
TCP/IP and Cisco's router technologies long ago isolated the
characteristics of the host/client systems from the net itself - that's
the REAL success of the DARPAnet maturation! Today, for example, most
large corporate installations will have Windows servers facing the
Internet and looking behind them to UNIX boxes running as database
servers in the background - completely isolated from the Internet!

Once again, let me assert that IBM was not the main instrument to invade
homes and offices with PCs - but rather they laid down some initial
standards and sold some machines in modest quantities early on - but,
mostly, their "standards force" encouraged the establishment of much
greater marketing forces. It began with a great many new hardware
producers ... and, of course, Microsoft, who quickly got in step with
Intel, primarily, but more importantly with the multitude of standards
bodies (many formed at Microsoft's own instigation) that have by now
completely redefined what a Personal Computer is. Enter the Justice
Department ....

Intel will soon supplant IBM and Microsoft as the ultimate ogre,
though - when UNIX iron men start adopting Intel microprocessor
technology! They can't possibly blame IBM or Microsoft for that one!

W6BOB,
Understand your viewpoint, however remember the internet itself was
founded before IBM really got rolling into the homes scene and
the Internet is of course UNIX based from one end to the other.
The OS at the ends of the system is purely an interface of one
kind or another to make it useable.
                           Joe
