I can attest to that.
Been an examiner since the beginning and one thing that has always gotten to
me is for someone to come into an examination session and say " I haven't
really studied for this exam, I thought I might pass it anyway". And,
guess what, some have.
Noone thinks about the examiners could have stayed home and done something
useful. Noone thinks about the time involved for being at a session and
grading, manifests and forms to satisfy the regulations that have to be
completed.
W5YI now allows, with permission from the FCC, to give code tests whereby
the examinee can copy dots and dashes and later determine the actual
characters. If you don't believe this, call W5YI, Call the FCC or ask me
for a copy of a letter from the FCC stating so. This does not happen at a
session I attend, but it does and has happened. Extra class who can't copy
5wpm code. Now tell me we aren't "dumbing down" the requirements for an
amateur license.
I don't know if we will ever regain the pride of accomplishment this county
used to have. It certainly isn't there now.
