I dont know if I posed this question before or not. Probably not
on this reflector, but did so on the MARS system. How many if
any members of the old AARS (Army Amateur Radio System) are still
with us? Maj Gen Bob Sutton has asked for the above info on his
weekly MARS Chiefsnet comments. He assumes I am the last of the
breed but one never knows. We did have 2 members that were AARS
before I was, but when CW was outlawed on all Govt Freqcys
on Sep 30 1996 and the final WAR CW broadcast was made on several
freqcys simultaneously those 2 quit MARS and have'nt been heard from
since. One of those went back to the inception of AARS system,
and that was long before I got into AARS in 1940. I recall fond
memories of working Presidio of San Francisco from WVN at SanJuan
and passing tfc as fast as we could handle it to points further west
such as Cavite, Schofield Barracks, and even the NAVY stations that
were on Wake Isle and Guam at that time. We also intertwined with
the ACS (Alaska Communications Command) for the same purposes.
