"Please Help" tale of woe from alleged amateur appears to be SPAM (Oct 21,
2002) -- During the October 19-20 weekend, some members who signed up with
the ARRL E-Mail Forwarding System received a tale of woe from a purported
radio enthusiast or ham in Russia soliciting donations. The subject line of
this message is "PLEASE HELP." It appears that this message is false (some
preliminary evidence suggests the message didn't originate from Russia) and
nothing more than an attempt to gather donations from sympathetic and
unsuspecting amateurs. ARRL urges users to exercise extreme caution in
responding to this message, if you choose to respond at all. The sender
appears to have propagated this message by a using a spambot or similar
software to harvest ARRL E-Mail Forwarding Service @arrl.net suffix addresses
from any one of a number of public sources on the Internet. A spammer also
could use software that generates valid call signs and appends these to the
ARRL Forwarding Service "@arrl.net" suffix. While not the most efficient
method of spamming, this technique could result reaching a large number of
the more than 57,000 ARRL members who have signed up for the ARRL E-Mail
Forwarding Service. As most e-mail users already know, SPAM is an
Internet-wide problem and not isolated to the ARRL E-Mail Forwarding Service.
A sad fact of our "wired" society, however, is that the more your e-mail
address is posted in public, the more likely you are to receive unsolicited
e-mail. ARRL does not publish or provide e-mail addresses to any third party.
The ARRL has been investigating possible solutions to minimize this problem
for ARRL E-Mail Forwarding Service users. Unfortunately, a simple, cost
effective solution for reducing SPAM does not yet exist. More information
about SPAM and the ARRL E-Mail Forwarding Service is available on the ARRL
Web site.
