Staples would be OK as the wood is dry and there should be little loss.

Outdoors it will be a different matter, as the wood will get wet and
could cause you some SWR problems which the tuner should take out.

I have used the loop idea outside before and it does work.  The only problem
is the height above ground of the antenna.

I currently use an antenna outside fed with 450 ohm ladder line.  In the
mornings, with heavy dew, I have to tune out the SWR as the ladder line is
laying on the roof.  Also when it is raining, the SWR keeps changing because
of the water on the ladder line.
