You're overlooking something. Although we all die eventually, most
people, hams included, tend to think "not now, later --- MUCH later."
It's not just death, a LOT of unpleasant things tend to get put off or
ignored under the assumption that it will "solve itself."
Another aspect is in the collecting itself. A few radios, some parts to
play with, is not that large an investment. When you've got an entire
two car garage and a shop packed FULL .... Not everyone wants
to admit to how much money they've got invested in stuff of question-
able value. Additionally, most "collectors" think that everyone else
will KNOW the value of their collection and maintain it for them in
perpetuity.
And then, there's the third type. "Screw it, I'll be dead. Not my
problem."
People are funny, hams are no different. Well, some ARE decidedly
different. ;-)
