Actually three characters were changed, the period, the comma and the
exclamation point. The old period was dit dit space dit dit space dit
dit that was copied by machines as iii and so it was changed to dit dah
dit dah dit dah, which had been the comma. The comma was changed to dah
dah di dit dah dah, which had been the exclamation point. The
exclamation point was left out of the code altogether! We old-timers
remember it well, it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks!
