The answer to the second part of my question was the famous old
dah dah di di dah dah which use to be !
This was used to respond to a remark made by someone on the other
end of the circuit. Depending on just what remark was made by
the sender, dah dah di di dah dah could indicate on your part
Exclamatory reaction, Perplexity, or Consternation.
or just an accented response without elaboartion.
