I believe that you are correct.  The C from the continental code "di-dit 
space dit"  we use to check for a clear frequency.  Of course the timing on 
the space is less than we use for a space nowadays, in order to distinguish 
from spacing between letters.  How much more challenging Continental code 
would be compared to Morse.
