Hello, John,   NC-183D - you got it right, it was a tauted as a state of the
art receiver right after the war, but it really wasn't very stable.  I still
have one.  Th e first ham superhet by National was the FB7  - about 1932/22.
Before that the most popular National ham set was the SW-3, an extremely
popular and good ham receiver, boasting three tubes, l RF, detector and
audio amp.  I could not afford one back in the early 30s, but I have a
