Somebody who shall remain nameless sent me:
>Jeff,
>would I be mistaken if I would guess that you got your Extra after the 5 wpm
>rule change and that might be why you seem to be so bitter about cw ops?
>If so, understood. I've met many over the years who act the same way.
>
I upgraded to Advanced Class in 1968. Complete with the written test
and code test administered in an FCC field office.
Yes, I upgraded to Extra after they dropped the code requirements.
The last time I had to pass a code test was 1968, when was the last time
you were tested?
And for the record, I am NOT bitter about CW ops. I operate CW
myself. And by hand, with all four of the various keys made by the
Vibroplex company over the years. My first bug, an original, which
was given to my by my Elmer when I upgraded to Advanced class.
The VibroKeyer, with a Hallicrafters TO, an Iambic for use with the
built in keyer on my Icom IC-761 and their latest, creation, a straight
key.
For code practice, I send myself 5 letter groups and decode them with
a HAL PC-3000 card. Pretty well means you have to send pretty clean
to have it decode properly.
Over the years, I've handled traffic via phone, RTTY, packet and CW.
I've been involved with my local radio clubs as an Elmer, and have
served on frequency coordination and usage management groups.
And I hold a commercial FCC license.
But then I didn't figure you'd know that. You'd already made up your
mind that I was some bitter clue less and code less wanna be.
In a word, yes, you are mistaken.
Jeff
