Tnx for the feedback guys, Norm (gr) and Don. Ah what memories
you bring back. Yep I was CHOP at WVN so had crypto certification
also and had to review the Thompson Sub manual (just in case) Grin.)
And yep Boehme was just as you mentioned. We used it as well
as TTY on island but primarily it was BOEHME to WAR. The crypto
guys took care of their seperate duties from the Radio Gang.
The BOEHME turned out to be a snap. I thought it would be
terribly hard to go blind reading and typing that tape cruising
by at the top of our MILLS at around 75 wpm or so. It was'nt
bad at all once you got the hang of it. Remember all the "PB's"
the opr had to do who was controlling the BOEHME speed etc.
A clapp of thunder and lightning resulted in a PB invariably.
BTW I hadnt even qualified on a colt 45 pistol yet in '43
after got to San Juan cause missed out on Boot camp and all
that stuff. When the top kick was checking my records he
found out about that and rushed me out on a firing range there
just to make sure I could use it if necessary. It was just
me and him you might say no one else in sight.
I used "pu" as my sine at the time but later on after the
war I continued makeing my bread with CW at Panam and
2 years at WBR (CAA Stn at Miami). However when was in
Airlines cw work, had to change my sine to "yu" cause the
ARTC controllers didnt tolerate any kind of nasty responses
and "pu" could be taken the wrong way. YU even got me into
trouble depending how angry I was and my tone of voice
when I spoke those 2 letters (if you catch my drift).
                       Joe
